50% Chardonnay, 50% Roussanne
Mas des Agrunelles is situated north-west of Montpellier up on the Terrasses du Larzac. Unlike the typical wines of the region, Frederic and Stephanie make delicate and subtle wines with gentle extraction. Rather than focusing on varietals, each of the 12 Mas des Agrunelles cuvees showcases the terroir of individual parcels covering 25ha and a range of soil types from fractured Jurassic limestone to red marne. Biodynamic principles are followed right down to bottling on fruit days, and when possible on the descending moon.
The grapes for the Barbaste are from the very limestoney north facing plots of Mas Neuf in Argelliers. Co-fermented Chardonnay and Roussanne. Fermentation takes place in amphora with native yeasts. Elevage is a mix of amphora and stainless steel. Bottling takes place a little before spring with a very low dose of sulfur. This was a real stand out wine to us on our last trip to France. It bold and beautiful!
Tasting notes : Stone fruit, quince, honey. Full-bodied and textured with a nice touch of freshness for balance.
Food pairing : Seabass baked with waxy potatoes and fennel !
