Mas Des Agrunelles - Carino '19 - Languedoc, France

£24.50

Carignan

Mas des Agrunelles is situated north-west of Montpellier up on the Terrasses du Larzac. Unlike the typical wines of the region, Frédéric and Stéphanie make delicate and subtle wines with gentle extraction. Rather than focusing on varietals, each of the 12 Mas des Agrunelles cuvées showcases the terroir of individual parcels covering 25ha and a range of soil types from fractured Jurassic limestone to red marne. Biodynamic principles are followed right down to bottling on fruit days, and when possible on the descending moon.

The Cariño comes from an old plot of Carignan located next to the estate in Argelliers, planted in the 1950s. This grape variety is better known for producing lakes of wine that were as popular with bistros as with French troops, who used to receive a ration of a litre a day. But when made from old vines it can produce wonderfully complex wines.

Tasting notes : Cherry, fennel, tobacco. Medium to light bodied with smooth, gentle tannins.

Food pairing : A great one to take along to a Turkish restaurant !
