70% Carricante, 30% Native Varieties
Vigneti Vecchio is a family-run winery located at around 800m above sea level on the
northern slopes of Mount Etna. Established in 2016 by Carmelo Vecchio and his wife
Rosa La Guzza, the estate is deeply rooted in the region's winemaking tradition.
Carmelo and Rosa are committed to organic farming practices and minimal
intervention winemaking. Their approach emphasizes respect for the land, tradition,
and simplicity in vinification. This philosophy allows the unique characteristics of
Etna's terroir to be expressed authentically in their wines.
The wine is predominantly crafted from Carricante grapes (approximately 70%),
complemented by a 30% blend of indigenous white varieties, including Catarratto,
Minnella, Grecanico, and Inzolia. Harvesting is done manually, followed by a 3-5 day
maceration on the skins and gentle pressing. Fermentation employs indigenous
yeasts, and maturation occurs in glass resin, steel, and cement vessels over 6-8
months.
Tasting Notes : On the nose, it offers complex and elegant aromas of ripe stone
fruits and herbal notes. The palate is well-balanced, crisp, and mineral, with citrus
undertones and a lingering smoky-volcanic finish.
Food Pairing : A bowl of saffron risotto dusted with Pecorino Romano. Or a plate of
crispy whitebait with lemon.
