Mas des Agrunelles is situated north-west of Montpellier up on the Terrace du Larzac. Unlike the typical wines of the region, Frederic and Stephanie make delicate and subtle wines with gentle extraction. Rather than focusing on varietals, each of the Mas des Agrunelles' twelve cuvees showcases the terroir of individual parcels covering 25ha and a range of soil types from fractured Jurassic limestone to red marne. Biodynamic principles are followed right down to bottling on fruit days, and when possible on the descending moon.
The Mas de Perry Domaine in le Closcas, Murles, has been in Stephanie’s family since 1773, and this a cuvee focusing on the parcel above the Chateau: Hauts de Perry. The Hauts de Perry comes from a limestone-dominated plot at an altitude of 270m, the highest parcels they have, where the fractured Jurassic rock is very exposed. Ageing takes place in a terracotta jar and neutral plastic 'flextanks' for approximately 2 years. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration. This will be an excellent Christmas wine from a lesser-known appellation
Tasting notes : Juicy dark fruit, leather, violets. Full-bodied, rich, and tannic, but not without a juicy, easy-drinking quality !
Food pairing : Very slow cooked lamb with aromatic spices and dried herbs.
