Domaine Padié - Petit Taureau - Roussillon, France

50% Mourvèdre, 40% Carignan, 10% Syrah

In the rugged hills of the Roussillon, a quite winemaking revolution is taking place. The region was once known for producing seas of fortified 'Vin Doux Naturel' but its declining popularity has seen vineyards abandoned and towns depopulated. However, the region is dotted with parcels of old vines capable of producing extraordinary wines. These have attracted producers such as Jean Phillipe Padié, who farms 18ha of vines divided up into 30 parcels around the town of Calce.

This wine is the Domaine's main cuveé grown from parcels of vines planted mainly on rocky, schist soil - ideal for making top-quality wine. The wine is fermented with whole bunches of grapes - which results in smoother texture and enhanced fruitiness. The finished wine is then aged in concrete vats for 10 months.

Tasting notes : Blackberries, minty, dried herbs. Medium-bodied with ripe, smooth tannins and excellent freshness.

Food pairing : Anything on a charcoal grill ! One to take along to a BYO Turkish restaurant.
