Château Falfas - Côtes de Bourg '17 - Bordeaux, France

£37.00

55% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec

In one of the world's most expensive wine regions, it pays to be adventurous. The Côtes de Bourg may not have the same prestige as some appellations but this sub-region, which lies on the right-bank of the Dordogne produces wine that can pack a serious punch. Limestone soils and hilly terrain provide the ideal conditions to ripen grapes, especially as the climate warms.

The Château Falfas was built in the 17th century. Today, the estate is run by Veronique Cochran. Her parents had a vineyard in the Loire and her father was one of the first people to apply biodynamic principles to vineyards. Her brother Matthieu is a biodynamic consultant and has worked with famous estates across the world and in Bordeaux (including Margaux’s Chateau Palmer).

This wine is aged in oak barrels (30% of which are new) for a year to help soften the tannins and allow earthy, cocoa-like flavours to develop.

Tasting notes : Plums, chocolate, liquorice. Full-bodied with smooth tannins.

Food pairing : Try alongside some of our 24-month matured Comté or a piece of pâté en croûte
