Wine Case - Viva Italia!
This month we're celebrating all things Italian. Italy has long been one of the largest wine-producing countries in the world. It rivals France in its diversity of terroirs and, as a result, the range of different styles of wine that it produces. March's Viva Italia! case features a gently fizzy Prosecco and a fresh Gavi from the North of Italy, two quite different red wines from Tuscany, and something a little unusual: a Sangiovese grown in France!
Le Spinee- Prosecco - Treviso (Sparkling)
100% Glera. Ivano and Michele run a small, organic estate situated between the rivers Piave and Sile in the Treviso province. A classic "frizzante" style of Prosecco that has a gentle fizz with crisp, clean notes of pear, citrus, and a hint of tropical fruit.
Le Marne 2018 - Gavi - Piemonte (White)
100% Cortese. This Gavi is the work of Federica Carraro and Luigi Grosso, based about 20km north of Genoa in the heart of Piemonte. This classic style of Italian white is fresh and elegant with flavours of citrus, pear and peach paired with mouthwatering acidity.
Montenidoli 2019 - Rosato Toscana - Tuscany (Rosé)
100% Canaiuolo. Montenidoli is a landmark estate in San Gimignano, famed for producing characterful, organically farmed wines. This wine is delicate and lightly coloured styles on the nose and is a great substitute for Provence pink.
Cantine Vittoria Innocenti 2016 - Rosso di Montepulciano - Tuscany
100% Sangiovese. The Innocenti estate lies between Montepulciano and Montefollonico, 12ha of which are vines farmed organically. The wine is aged in old oak barrels for two years and produces a wine that is juicier and lighter than you'd expect for a Sangiovese.
San Firenze 2017 - Chianti Superiore - Tuscany
100% Sangiovese. Fattoria di Sammontana has 16ha of biodynamically farmed vineyards 20km outside Florence and the estate has been in the same family since the 1860s. The wine is aged in old oak barrels and then in bottle for a further year. This is a classic Chianti: bold tannins matched by fresh acidity with flavours of black plum, raspberry and olive tapenade.
Mas du Chêne 2018 - Nîmes, Languedoc
100% Sangiovese. An Italian grape, but grown in the south of France. Located between Nîmes and Arles, this organic vinyard includes at tiny plot of the Italian grape which they use to make this wine. It spends 10 months in old oak for added texture and complexity, making a wine that is spirtually Italian with flavours of red cherry, dried herbs and balsamic vinegar.
