Weninger- Ponzichter - Sopron, Hungary

£20.00

Pinot Noir, Zweigelt

When drinking wine from the Austrian Burgenland, it’s important to remember that, until a hundred years ago, this region was at the centre of the vast Austro-Hungarian Empire. Franz Weninger reflects on this legacy by naming his wine Ponzichter, the nickname for the German speaking minority who make wine in the town of Sopron, just across the border in Hungary.

This wine is a blend of Pinot Noir and Zweigelt grown in Mittelburgenland (in Austria) and Sopron (in Hungary). Both vineyards are farmed biodynamically and the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts before being aged for 18 months in old oak barrels.

Tasting notes: Red cherry, raspberry, black pepper. Fresh and bright with light tannins and zippy acidity.

Food pairing: Perfect to wash down salty sheep’s milk cheese, or shitake mushrooms.
