Principiano Ferdinando - Barolo 2017 - Piedmonte, Italy

100% Nebbiolo

King of wine and wine of kings. Barolo is one of Italy’s most sought after wines. It comes from a small southern corner of Piedmont that gives the wine its name. The vines are on south-west facing slopes outside the village of Boscareto in Serralunga d’Alba. This sub-region of Barolo has long been known for making the most tannic and rustic wines but Ferdinando makes wines with elegance.

The wine is 100% Nebbiolo. Whole bunch fermentation is used to reduce the level of tannin and produce a more elegant wine. Fermentation takes place using wild yeast and the wine is then aged in 3000 litre oak barrels for between three and four years. If you’ve ever found Barolo too difficult because of its astringency, this is definitely worth a try. .

Tasting notes: raspberries, rose petals, sweet spice. An approachable Barolo with high levels of tannin but not overly astringent

Food pairing: Try with an indulgent truffle risotto or a buttery ravioli dish
