Les Granges Paquenesses - La Pierre - Jura, France

While many winemakers today come from a long line of vigerons, Loreline Laborde started from scratch. She worked in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in her 20s before moving to Jura, renting a rundown 2.5ha farm and turning it into a winery. She farms biodynamically and spends her free time tending to her goats and chickens or looking after her vegetable garden.

Savagnin is the Jura’s most famous grape, which probably isn’t saying very much. But it makes the oxidised Vin Jaune that the region is famous for. However, it is also used to make more traditional styles of white wine. Loreline ages this wine in large, old oak barrels which she keeps topped up to prevent the wine from oxidising but still shows off this underappreciated grape.

Tasting notes: Lime, menthol, spice. Fresh acidity but full-bodied and rich.

Food pairing: Great for generously seasoned joints of meat or curries.
