David & Benjamin Duclaux - “La Germine” Côte-Rôtie 2016 - Northern Rhône, France


95% Syrah, 5% Viognier

Meaning "roasted slope" in France, the south-facing terraced vineyards of Côte-Rôtie bake in the sun and producing a powerful yet improbably elegant expression of Syrah. 

Domaine Duclaux was founded in 1928 and is now run by the fourth generation: brothers Benjamin and David. The steep, stony soils of their vineyards are prone to erosion and they employ six people to help with the work. The brothers spend an average of 1000 hours a year just repairing the retaining walls of their terraces.

They ferment the Syrah along with a small amount of Viognier, an aromatic white grape. This traditional practice adds freshness and floral flavours to this otherwise bold wine. The wine sees extended ageing in large oak barrels to soften out its rough edges and help to develop extra complexity of flavour. 

Tasting notes: Blackberries, floral, liquorice. Full-bodied with firm tannins. Will benefit from decanting. 

Food Pairing: The perfect match for a rich steak dinner, some ragu or our duck saucisson
