Clos du Joncuas - Gigondas 2017 - Rhône, France


Grenache, Mourvedre, Cinsault

Gigondas is an elegant little town in the Southern Rhône known for making gargantuan red wines. Sheltered from the notorious mistral winds by the rocky ridges of the Dentelles de Montmirail, this area is notably warm, even for the south of France. Fortunately, altitude helps moderate the wines.

This wine is made from an organically farmed vineyard first certified in 1989. It’s mostly a Grenache with some Mourvedre added for additional tannic power and a touch of Cinsault for freshness. The wine is aged for 12 months in oak barrels and bottled without fining or filtration. It then receives additional time in the bottle to soften its tannins and develop some more flavour complexity.

Tasting notes: Blackberry, chocolate, prune. Powerful tannin balanced by a dose of refreshing acidity. Full-bodied.

Food pairing: Steak, or some deeply flavoured, slow-cooked frijoles and fresh tortillas
