Claus Preisinger - Puszta Libre - Burgenland, Austria

Zweigelt, St Laurent

Claus Preisinger’s winery is nestled in the village of Gols by Lake Neusiedlersee in Burgenland. His 19ha vineyard is broken up into 60 parcels, each of which is farmed biodynamically. The traditions of winemaking in this part of Austria are nearly indistinguishable from those of neighbouring Hungary: the name “Puszta Libre” comes from the Hungarian for prairie (Puszta) and the Spanish for free (Libre).

Claus says this is how his grandfather used to make wine. Carbonic maceration (where the grapes are allowed to ferment without being pressed, like in Beaujolais) means that minimal tannins and colour are extracted.

Tasting notes: Raspberry, blackberry, spice. Fresh, juicy with very little tannin.

Food pairing: Stick a chilled one in the picnic basket! Great with charcuterie and salty cheeses.
