Lebanon’s troubled history has not made winemaking easy. That is a shame because vines have been cultivated in the Bekaa Valley for some six millennia. Nevertheless, a handful of producers are making exceptional wine and Musar is at the forefront. The dry, sunny conditions of the Bekaa are ideal for organic viticulture and Musar has been certified organic since 2006.

The “Père et Fils” is Musar’s second wine, a blend of Cinsault, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon that is lighter and earlier-drinking than the top wine, but to me is every bit as tasty. The wine is made from grapes grown on 30 year old bush vines and fermented in concrete tanks before being aged in oak for up to 9 months. The wine is unfined and unfiltered and released four years after harvest.

Tasting notes: damsons, sweet spices, dried herbs. A sumptuous red wine with smooth tannins balanced by just the right amount of freshness.

Food pairing: Lebanese food! Deep fried cauliflower with tahini, Fattoush, kibbeh, Kafta.
