Blackbook - Pygmalion 2018 - Surrey/London, UK

100% Chardonnay

Blackbook is an urban winery run by wife-and-husband team Lynsey and Sergio. They buy grapes from small growers throughout England and then make them into wine in their small winery under a railway arch in Battersea, south London. Their wine project is motivated by a love of three things: "cool-climate pinot noir and chardonnay; the English wine industry; and this fair city we call home, London."

The grapes are grown by Greyfriars Vineyard in Surrey in 2018 in what is known as England's "vintage of the century". Recognising the exceptional quality of the grapes, they aged it in a mix of new and old oak barrels for almost two years before bottling it without fining or filtration.

The name comes from the Greek myth of a sculptor who falls in love with one of his statues that would go on to inspire the George Bernard Shaw play by the same name and would eventually be adapted into "My Fair Lady".

Tasting notes: Pineapple, melon, hazelnuts. Bright acidity matched by a creamy, smooth texture. Drinking now but could also be kept to age for 5+ years.

Food pairing: This would pair well with some slightly richer cheeses like Westcombe cheddar or Epoisse.
